Launch of The Handbook of EEA Law

The Handbook of EEA Law

On Tuesday 15 December 2015, The Handbook of EEA Law edited by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Carl Baudenbacher, President of the EFTA Court was launched at an event hosted by the EFTA Secretariat in Brussels.

The Handbook provides the reader with a thorough grounding in the EEA Agreement, detailing how secondary EU law becomes applicable in the EFTA pillar, and the roles played by the EFTA Surveillance Authority and the EFTA Court. It considers the EEA Agreement from the respective perspectives of the national authorities, courts, and the legal professions of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The book meticulously examines substantive EEA law, beginning with the general principles and the four freedoms, through competition law and State aid to fields such as natural resources, social policy and tax law. Emphasis is placed on jurisprudence and especially that of the EFTA Court. Each chapter has been written by a judge, noted practitioner or eminent academic in their respective fields.

More than a hundred attended the launch, including representatives of the leadership of three EFTA institutions, and heard speeches given by Dag W. Holter, Deputy Secretary-General of EFTA, Sven Erik Svedman, President of the EFTA Surveillance Authority, Ian Forrester, Judge of the General Court of the European Union, Anke Seyfried of Springer, the Handbook’s publisher, and President Baudenbacher (copies of the speeches can be found here). The evening continued with a reception catered by Léa Linster, Luxembourg’s Food Ambassador, accompanied by refrains from Jazz’ Animation.
