This field allows you to search the full text of documents and case descriptions.
You could fill in the ‘Type of document’ field to limit the search to specific types of document that contain your keywords (by default, all types of document are searched).
The following may be used to refine the search:
- Logical operators (Boolean operators)
- AND (space).
Example: butter cheese will find documents containing both of those words
- OR (comma).
Example: butter, cheese will find documents containing the word butter, or the word cheese, or both.
- EXCEPT (exclamation mark before the word).
Example: butter -cheese will find documents containing the word butter but not those containing the word cheese.
- Use quotes " " to search for an exact set of words, e.g. "trade union"
By default, if we search only by keywords, the results are arranged by date of lodging.

Type of document
By default, if no type is chosen, the search will cover all types of documents present in the database.
One or more types of document may be selected from this list.
- Click on «+» to see the list of all available types of document. Select one or more types of document and click on Validate criteria. (*Selected types of document will appear above within a red box. You can remove a type by clicking on the cross on the right of the type.) To launch the search, click on Search cases at the bottom of the page.
- The results page will display all cases that include the selected document type (e.g. you searched for an Order of the Court and the results page will show only cases that include an Order of the Court).
NB! If several document types are selected the results page will display all cases that include one or more of the selected document types.
By default, the cases are arranged by the date of the lodging of the application initiating proceedings.
- Click on a case and you will find a link to the document type you are searching.
It is also possible to limit the document search by combining it with the search criteria under Dates. They allow you to limit the search to particular periods, defined by the date of lodging of the application initiating proceedings, the date of the delivery or the date of the oral hearing.
Subject-matter
Use this criterion to search by subject.
Click on «+». Select one or more subjects and click on Validate criteria. (*Selected subjects will appear above within a red box. You can remove a type by clicking on the cross on the right of the type.) To launch the search, click on Search cases at the bottom of the page.
NB! If several subjects are selected, they are, by default, separated by the logical operator OR.
Procedure
Use this criterion to search by type of procedure.
Click on «+». Select one or more criteria and click on Validate criteria. (*Selected subjects will appear above within a red box. You can remove a type by clicking on the cross on the right of the type.) To launch the search, click on Search cases at the bottom of the page.
NB! If more than one type of procedure is selected, they are by default separated by the logical operator OR.
Source of a question referred for a preliminary ruling
Use this criterion to search by country of origin of a question referred for a preliminary ruling.
Click on «Add criteria». Select one or more sources and click on Validate criteria. (*Selected subjects will appear above within a red box. You can remove a type by clicking on the cross on the right of the type.) To launch the search, click on Search cases at the bottom of the page.
NB! If more than one type of source is selected, they are by default separated by the logical operator OR.
